I love my work as a memory coach. It enables me to empower people with knowledge and skills to make a positive change in their life. It is extremely rewarding. Each individual is unique with differing needs and wants. Coaching for the last twelve years, you get a good sense of what works and what doesn’t. So I wanted to share my coaching formula with you. You can use it to be your own coach to achieve success.
Here’s how it works:
1. Problem solving – identifying problem areas to fix
You have wants, however have barriers. Make a list of the barriers and write down why they are barriers in the first place. You may find that the only barriers are the ones you’ve created in your mind. Or they could be physical, financial, time based, skill-based, distance, and so on. Make the list comprehensive as you can and be honest with yourself.
2. Program development – customized coaching schedule created
Once you’ve identified barriers and problem areas, you need to have the knowledge, skills and resources to act upon them. As the coach, I would create a schedule based on the program customized for individuals. What you can do is next to each of your problem areas, write down all the knowledge, skills and resources that you may need to address it. For example:

With some problem areas you may not be able to fill in the knowledge and skills columns because you just don’t know. This is quite normal. The way to fill it is via your resources column. Once you start doing your research and finding better ways, you will gain a better understanding of what knowledge and skills you will require. As time passes you will no doubt add further to the list as you will become familiar with what is necessary to assist you.
3. Goal setting – a plan set out for you to achieve your goals
Just like problem areas, list down all your goals and do the same as above. This time instead of a ‘How does it feel’ column, add a ‘How will it feel?’ column.

The purpose of the ‘feel’ column is to help you engage with your problem and goal. It provides an emotive response to the brain which stimulates further action. You can say that this is one of the most important things you can do. Write down as much feeling as you can. It will only help you reach your goals quicker. Have a vision with emotion!
4. Action plan towards your goals – exercises and tasks to help you succeed
You have your comprehensive list, now you can start to formulate all the tasks and exercises you need to work towards your goal. Read those books, attend those seminars, get coaching yourself. Whatever it takes to reach your destination, write it down. This will become your roadmap to success.
5. Habit plan – integrating learned knowledge into everyday life
It’s no use having set out a well laid plan but not taking action, or embedding it into your daily life. You need to create habits for your actions so that when working on your goals, the tasks come to you naturally. That’s the whole point of creating a habit in the first instance. It’s difficult and requires a ridiculous amount of self-discipline if something is not developed into a habit.
For example, you will have all the knowledge, resources and skills in the world, but only accomplish a small percentage before you give up, or something else happens in life and the initial goal fades away, or you get distracted. This is a reason why a lot of people out there don’t do self-development well. They purchase the CD audio set, but only get through the first few before giving up. This also depends on how crap the CDs are of course, but still, if they are willing to pay for it then at least go through the whole thing. There is much less accountability without habit, hence resulting in higher failure. Here is where having a coach can really help as it provides you that accountability measure and feedback if you’re on the right track or not. And you will not have to put up with boring audio CDs!
6. Ongoing support and review – never feel lost working towards your goals
As you are working towards your goals, make sure you do have someone to talk to. That way you can update them or be encouraged by their comments towards your progress. Don’t try and go it alone. After all you’re really wanting something and I’m sure your family, friends, colleagues, even strangers would want you to succeed. If there isn’t, then seek people interested in similar goals, classes, social media groups, search Google! It’s all there for you to take advantage of. Providing ongoing support for the coaching I provide gives my clients the piece of mind to know they can contact me at any point to check if what they are doing is right, their in a good headspace, they are able to extract more knowledge and further develop their skills, and review lessons we had earlier to solidify retention.
